Sir Anthony is a scholar of Trinity Hall, Cambridge with Double First in Law Tripos. He practised as a barrister of Gray’s Inn at the Commercial Bar for many years (1962-1992), specialising in primary insurance and reinsurance including marine insurance, maritime disputes, banking and international trade and distributorship agreements, ICC and ICSID arbitrations, including acting as ICC, LCIA and ICSID arbitrator. He was appointed as Queen’s Counsel in 1977. He is on the panel of international arbitrators of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA) and the China International Economic Trade Arbitration Commission (CEITAC).

From 1992 to 2007, Sir Anthony served as a Judge of the Commercial Court, in the High Court, London, specialising in commercial litigation of all kinds, and hearing innumerable cases on arbitration law and practice, including the applicability of the New York Convention e.g. Westacre Investments v. Jugoimport SDPR Holding Co Ltd [1999] qb 740 and A v. B [2007] All ER (Comm) p. 571. Sir Anthony also handed down many decisions which were affirmed by the House of Lords. His decisions involved a diverse spectrum of commercial issues, in particular, those relating to maritime transportation, marine insurance, banking and arbitration.

Sir Anthony retired from the Bench in 2007 and began practice as an international commercial arbitrator. Disputes arbitrated include issues of Primary Insurance, Reinsurance, Sports Dispute, Charterparty, Bills of Lading, Intellectual Property and international sales of commodities and ships.

Sir Anthony is the author and co-editor of The Practice and Procedure of the Commercial Court (LLP); General Editor and contributor to the Encyclopedia of International Commercial Litigation (Kluwer Law).
